How Road Camber is Calculated

Road camber, also called crossfall, is the transverse slope provided on the pavement surface to facilitate drainage of rainwater away from the carriageway.

When the pavement width and camber percentage are known, the level difference can be calculated using:

Level Difference (m) = Pavement Width (m) × Camber (%) ÷ 100

Worked Example

Given:

  • Pavement width = 7.0 m
  • Camber = 2.5%

Level Difference:

= 7.0 × 2.5 ÷ 100

= 0.175 m

Therefore, the elevation difference across the 7.0 m width is approximately 175 mm.

Camber from Level Difference

If the measured level difference and pavement width are known, camber can be calculated using:

Camber (%) = Level Difference ÷ Pavement Width × 100

For example, if the level difference across a 7.0 m pavement width is 175 mm:

Camber = 0.175 ÷ 7.0 × 100 = 2.5%

Road Camber – QA/QC Checks

  • Verify the approved pavement cross-section and drawings.
  • Check the specified camber/crossfall for the pavement type.
  • Take levels at the centreline, edges and relevant intermediate locations.
  • Compare measured levels with the approved design profile.
  • Ensure adequate crossfall is maintained for effective surface drainage.
  • Record observations in the relevant inspection or quality-control format.

Engineering Note

The calculator performs a geometric crossfall calculation. The applicable camber value must be taken from the approved design, relevant IRC/MoRTH provisions, drawings and project specifications.

Do not use a default camber value for construction acceptance without checking the applicable project requirements.
