ToggleThis work consists of laying and compacting clean, crushed, graded aggregate premixed with water to a dense mass over a prepared GSB sub-base. Layers should follow approved lines, grades, and cross-sections.
Coarse aggregates shall be crushed stone. At least 90% of pieces retained on 4.75 mm sieve must have two or more fractured faces. Follow MoRTH Table 400-12.
Follow MoRTH Table 400-13 for continuous gradation.
Lay adjoining shoulders with WMM and follow Clause 404.3.3 to prevent lateral spread.
Mix aggregates in an approved plant with controlled water dosing, forced mixing (pug-mill/pan), vibrating screens, conveyor, and centralized control. Determine Optimum Moisture Content (OMC) per IS:2720 Part 8 and ensure uniform wetting.
| S. No. | Test | Method | Requirement |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Los Angeles Abrasion / Aggregate Impact Value | IS:2386 Pt 4 / IS:5640 | LA ≤40%, AIV ≤30% |
| 2 | Combined Flakiness & Elongation | IS:2386 Pt 1 | ≤35% |
| IS Sieve | % Passing |
|---|---|
| 53 mm | 100 |
| 45 mm | 95–100 |
| 26.5 mm | — |
| 22.4 mm | 60–80 |

| 2.36 mm | 15–30 |
| 600 μ | 8–12 |
| 75 μ | 0–5 |
Material finer than 425 μ shall have PI ≤6%. Gradation must be continuous without large jumps between adjacent sieves.
| Item | Test | Frequency |
|---|---|---|
| WMM | Aggregate Impact Value | 1 per 1000 m³ |
| Grading | 1 per 200 m³ | |
| Flakiness & Elongation | 1 per 500 m³ | |
| PI (425 μ) | 1 per 200 m³ | |
| Field Density | 3 tests per 1000 m² |
Spread aggregates immediately using self-propelled paver with hoppers, screed (tamping & vibration), and electronic leveling. Motor grader may be used for small jobs. Avoid segregation.
Allow WMM to dry for 24 hours before traffic.
Follow MoRTH Section 900. Surface tolerances: longitudinal ±15 mm, cross slope ±0.3%, evenness ≤12 mm per 3 m straightedge.
Scarify full thickness if irregularities occur, reshape or replace with fresh mix, and recompact. Minimum treated area: 5 m × 2 m.
Standard construction methodologies for highway works as per MoRTH 5th Revision and IRC Specifications.
